Sandra Frick
mixed media artist…………
Sandra Frick is an artist who works with clay slabs
to create constructions with an emphasis on movement of line, form, and
surface. The pieces have an earthy quality to them. The clay surfaces are
treated in a nontraditional manner; they are sawdust fired, creating a
smoky surface instead of a traditional glazed surface.
The pieces are
embellished with natural materials such as bamboo, reed, wood, linen
thread, copper, so on. The work often evokes a primal or contemporary
tribal feeling. .
Often asked where the inspiration for the pieces come
from becomes an answer of “what have I done with my life so far?” A life
long exposure to nature, gardens, the arts, and travel all become part of
life experiences that are reflected in the art work. The
enjoyment of the natural world and cultures that explore natural materials
in a “non-Western” manner seem to have had an influence. Forms, shapes,
textures, and materials of some African, Americas’ First Nations, and the
Pacific Basin area have all had an impact on the work.
The work often has
a feel of something of another time or culture, something mysterious,
connected to the basics of fire, water, and earth. Each piece is an
original one of a kind creation. No two are identical, each piece being a
new set of problem solving ideas.
As each piece tends to require about a
month’s time to complete, there are a limited number of art pieces created
each year. The mixed media sculptures evoke different emotional responses
from each viewer.

Sandra’s
art work has been exhibited in galleries, art centers, and museums in the
Midwest since the 80’s. Since her permanent move to Florida in 2002, her
work has been in numerous regional galleries and art centers receiving
various show awards.
Sandra received her art teaching degree from the
University of Wisconsin in Whitewater and an MA. in ceramics from Northern
Illinois University in DeKalb. Graduate work was done at the University
of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana plus workshops and classes at the Art
Institute of Chicago, Rockford College in Illinois, Arrowmont School of
Arts and Craft in Tennessee, as well as regional workshops.
She was an
original co-founder of a fine arts gallery and an art instructor in
Rockford, Illinois.
She continues to teach classes and workshops in the
Sarasota area.
