Artist's Statement
“Ion Series,” the latest anthology of work by artist Ellen G. Mason, continues to explore her interest in the landscape. Although not site-specific, her collection, featuring oil stick drawings on gessoed paper and oil on canvas paintings, evokes her time spent in Florida.
The abstract approach she implements in capturing the essence of her natural surroundings transmits an ionic impulse that will touch all viewers.
The colors, materials, and textures Mason utilizes in her pieces conjure the metaphysical effects of the Floridian terrain and its aquamarine waters. Mason achieves this effect by beginning with a complex series of nonrepresentational marks, then subtracting to reveal images of simple landscapes.
Ellen G. Mason has been creating and exhibiting her art since 1981. Her work which has received various awards and accolades, has been included in numerous group and solo shows, including “Art of the Northeast,” (1984) judged by the famous art critic, Hilton Kramer.
A fellow Syracuse alumna, Mason continued her art studies at SUNY Purchase, and Silvermine.
