Maia Rubin is an artist craftswoman with the rare
ability to see form and beauty in unusual materials. In
her senior years, she has produced some of the best work
in her career.
The giant seed pods of the queen palm tree, common to
southwest Florida, are central to a series of sculptures
with rows of subtly colored, hand dyed clothespins wired
in flowing patterns and displayed horizontally. Another
group, in neutral colors with gold accents, form
contemplative standing sculptures.
In a different mood, coiled basketry techniques are
used, with decidedly non-traditional results. these
pieces constructed from brightly colored garden hoses
and cable ties, are witty and modern.
Ms Rubin graduated from the Tyler school of fine arts
with a B. F. A. and from Columbia teacher's college with
an M. A. She also took classes at the Art Students
League and with Hans Hoffman. After many years as a
teacher and abstract painter, studying weaving and
basketry sparked an interest in fiber sculpture. Past
experience has culminated in work expressing a highly
original visual imagination.
