ARTIST'S STATEMENT

The recent work is mixed media.

Collages using watercolor and pencil with old photos, my photos, maps, navigation charts, beads and thread

Tape transfers (scotch tape lifts ink from newspaper weather maps and other images) on to board

Oil paintings with found objects: buttons, nails, beads and stamps on wood or packing forms, arranged in grids

I love the complexity and sensitive changes that occur when repetitions are juxtaposed

side by side.

In collecting buttons, beads, photos, stamps, maps, threads and papers, I have a source of endless variations from which to choose.

I arrange them in grids, labyrinths or in circular forms: mandalas.

The symmetry of these compositions enables the viewer to see repetitions and variations that occur.

The ancient symbols of the maze and mandala have been used as focusing devices for meditation. I use their symmetry and rhythm to organize and center the work.

I have found the making of these images to be a joyful centering activity. Ultimately making my artwork is a kind of meditation for me and I hope it becomes a joyful meditation for viewers.
